چکیده
I f ever there were a good example of a problem calling for a regional solution and steady sustained leadership, Chagas disease is it. Chagas disease, or American trypanosomiasis, is a debilitating and deadly infection that afflicts rural communities throughout Latin America. The poorest people living in rural areas, particularly those with inadequate housing, are the most vulnerable. In the early 1990s, Chagas disease was ranked as the most serious parasitic disease in Latin America, with a socioeconomic impact greater than that of all the other parasitic infections combined.1 An estimated 16 million to 18 million people in Latin America were infected with the disease a decade ago, with 50,000 Case 12 Controlling Chagas Disease in the Southern Cone of South America

Chagas disease, named after Carlos Chagas, who first described it in 1909, exists only on the American Continent. It is caused by a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs and via blood transfusion. Chagas disease has two successive phases: acute and chronic. The acute phase lasts six-eight weeks. Several years after entering the chronic phas...

Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas' disease in the Southern Cone of Latin America between the latitudes 10° S and 46° S. The long-term effectiveness of the control campaigns is greatly dependent upon the vector population structure. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes have been used in a number of T. infestans population genetic analyses. However, the maternally inherited marker...
متن کاملChagas: a neglected tropical disease.
Chagas disease which is caused by the haemoflagellate Trypanosoma cruzi is classically transmitted by Reduviid bugs of the genera Triatoma and Rhodnius and occurs when the bugs bite humans and pass infective trypomastigotes in their stools which enter the blood through puncture wound in the skin (1). Chagas disease has been recognized as a neglected tropical disease with between eight and nine ...

Chagas disease is one of the world’s most important neglected tropical diseases and a leading cause of disease and poverty in Latin America. An estimated 7-8 million people are infected worldwide with more than 99% of the cases occurring in the Americas, especially in the poorest countries in the region [1-3]. It is transmitted by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and the area known as Mesoamerica...

Chagas disease and kissing bugs: the basics The parasite Trypanosoma cruzi causes Chagas disease in humans, dogs, and other mammals. The insect vector, commonly known as the kissing bug (Figure 1), can transmit the parasite to hosts by biting and subsequently defecating near the site of the bite. The parasites live in the digestive tract of the bugs and are shed in the bug feces. When infectiou...
